The Lift Regulations of 1997 are the official UK version of the Lift Directive enacted by the European council on the 1st July 1997. The benefit of the Directive designed to enable free trade of approved new lifts and associated products between the EU. The Directive is a substantial improvement on previous standards which were not legally enforceable.
In order to satisfy the Lift Regulations, it is necessary for a new lift to be assessed by a qualified tester in accordance with the requirements of a European Harmonised standard (EN81 – Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts) in terms of quality and safety of both the materials and installation. Furthermore, when existing lifts are refurbished or the use of the building is changed it is necessary to upgrade the lift in accordance with the latest revisions to EN81.
Compliance will be evident by the display of a numbered CE mark.
All forms of lifting equipment is regulated under either the Lift Regulations or Machinery Regulations dependent upon its application.
Lifts designed for the movement of people (with the exception of platform lifts / lifting platforms designed specifically for the purpose of moving individuals with impaired mobility) have to comply with the Lift Regulations.
Lifts designed for the movement of goods along with platform lifts / lifting platforms designed specifically for the purpose of moving individuals with impaired mobility have to comply with the Machinery Regulations.
